Known as Kau Kee, Wolfberry or Goji leaves are the leaves of the goji plant. The same plant that gives you goji berries!
Goji leaves is a superfood that is high in vitamin A, B, C, E, K, protein, beta-carotene, and calcium. It has flavonoids that have antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. The stalks are thorny and inedible. To prepare goji leaves, you have to remove the leaves by plucking them.
They cannot be eaten raw.
Goji leaves do not store well, so you have to cook them within 2 days of buying them. They have similar properties as bagged spinach, but do taste a little different.
Availability is said to be year round, however I have found that this largely depends on where you live. The local stores in the Seattle metro area don’t carry them year-round. So if you live in an area where it’s a little harder to spot, get it when you see it, because you won’t know when you’ll stumble onto it again.
You can wilt it into soups, or stir fry it. They go well with eggs. Recipes to come!
